Foreign currency worth nearly Tk4cr seized at Dhaka airport; 2 detained
The process of filing separate criminal cases against the detainees is currently underway, officials said.
Customs authorities have seized foreign currencies worth nearly Tk4 crore from two outbound passengers at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka and detained them on suspicion of smuggling.
The currencies were recovered from the luggage of two passengers, Rafiqul Islam and Al Amin Molla, during separate searches conducted today (27 February) by the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID).
CIID Assistant Revenue Officer Sarwar Hossain confirmed the matter.
According to officials, Rafiqul Islam, a passenger of Bangkok-bound flight BS-217, was found carrying concealed foreign currencies including 405,500 Saudi riyals, 24,000 euros, 30,050 British pounds, and 7,841 Thai baht. The total estimated value of the seized currencies is approximately Tk2,20,56,040.
In a separate search, authorities recovered 485,000 Saudi riyals and 2,110 Thai baht hidden in the luggage of another passenger, Al Amin Molla. The estimated value of these currencies is about Tk1,59,87,747.
In total, foreign currencies worth Tk3,80,43,787 were seized from the two passengers.
The process of filing separate criminal cases against the detainees is currently underway, officials said.
