Dense fog disrupts flight operations at Dhaka airport for nearly 4 hours
“From 6am onwards, visibility dropped to zero. No aircraft could take off or land,” Group Captain SM Ragib Samad said, adding that operations resumed at 9:52am after weather conditions improved
Flight operations at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport were disrupted for nearly four hours this morning (4 January) due to dense fog, which sharply reduced visibility and forced the suspension of take-offs and landings, airport authorities said.
Airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad said the airport was not officially closed, but flight operations were halted on safety grounds.
"From 6am onwards, visibility dropped to zero. No aircraft could take off or land," he said, adding that operations resumed at 9:52am after weather conditions improved.
In a separate statement, the airport authorities said several flights were diverted to alternative destinations to ensure safe operations amid the fog. Six flights were diverted to Sylhet airport, one flight to Kolkata airport, and another to Hanoi airport.
"Once the weather returned to normal, all flight operations resumed with aircraft taking off and landing as usual," the airport authorities said, thanking passengers and stakeholders for their cooperation and patience during the disruption.
