At least five people died today (19 July) after reportedly drinking excessive amounts of spurious locally brewed liquor in Khulna's Sonadanga, police said.

The deceased have been identified as Babu, 50, Sabu, 60, Goutam Kumar Biswas, 47, Azibor, 59, and Tota, 60. All of them were residents of Khulna's Boyra area.

Another individual Sonu, 58, remains in critical condition and is currently on life support at Khulna Specialised Hospital, according to hospital sources.

"The incident occurred this evening at the Boyra Puja Khola intersection area in the city," Sonadanga Model Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdul Hai told The Business Standard.

"Both police and intelligence agencies are actively investigating the case. The bodies will be sent for autopsy and legal action will follow based on the findings," the SI added.
