Fire Service trains workers on septic tank safety in Dhaka

The Fire Service and Civil Defence today trained 75 workers at a 16-storey Shanta Holdings project in Gulshan-2 on septic tank risks and precautions.
Md Saleh Uddin, Deputy Director of Dhaka Division Fire Service, attended as the chief guest. He was joined by Kazi Nazmuzzaman, Assistant Director, Dhaka; Major (retd) Hafiz Al Asad, Chief Project Management Officer of the project; and other senior officials.
The programme began at 11:00am with a welcome speech by Kazi Nazmuzzaman. Hafiz Al Asad then delivered remarks on behalf of Shanta Holdings, followed by Md Saleh Uddin, who addressed the workers and led the training session.
From 12:30 p.m., participants observed practical demonstrations on ventilating septic tanks using smoke ejectors and air ventilators to remove contaminated air or gases. Techniques for extinguishing fires with portable extinguishers and tackling gas cylinder fires were also demonstrated and practised. The session concluded at 1:00pm.
The training, prompted by a recent tragedy, underscored the urgent need for safety after three workers died cleaning a septic tank in Munshiganj on 31 August. In the past five years, 228 lives have been lost in similar incidents involving septic tanks and sewage lines.
Such numbers highlight not only the critical importance of preventive training and awareness but also the collective responsibility of individuals, organisations, and authorities to prioritise worker safety and prevent future tragedies.
