A former Jubo Dal leader was shot dead in broad daylight by unidentified individuals in Chattogram's Raozan today (6 July), police said.

The incident occurred around noon in the Ishan Bhattar Hat area of Kodalpur union of the upazila.

The deceased, identified as Md Selim, 42, a resident of Shomserpara in Ward 7 of the same union, was the former member secretary of the Kodalpur union Jubo Dal convening committee. He was also a follower of BNP Vice Chairman and former MP Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury.

Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Raozan Police Station Monirul Islam Bhuiyan told The Business Standard, "Selim was taken to the Raozan Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead upon arrival."

"The body has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy," the OC said.

OC Monirul added, "Selim was involved with local BNP politics and had multiple cases filed against him. We suspect the murder may be linked to a rivalry over establishing local dominance.

"Police are investigating the matter and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. No cases have been filed yet."

According to witnesses and police, Selim was returning home from Ishan Bhatter Hat on a motorcycle with his wife when the attack took place. Five masked men, riding in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, intercepted them and opened fire on Selim before fleeing the scene.

Selim fell to the ground on the spot. Locals rushed to the scene and took Selim to the upazila health complex.

This killing marks another chapter in a series of violent incidents in Raozan, which has seen a surge in politically motivated attacks.

According to media reports, since 5 August last year, the upazila has witnessed 13 murders — 10 of them allegedly linked to political rivalry. The local unit of the BNP has been riven by internal clashes, resulting in over a hundred confrontations and leaving more than 300 people injured by gunfire.
