Roughly 14,300 MW electricity and 1,550 mmcfd gas will be needed at the peak hour during the ongoing summer, according to an inter-ministerial meeting held today virtually.

The meeting was held on power supply during the upcoming Ramadan and ongoing summer season and instructed all concerned to ensure uninterrupted supply of power and energy during the holy month of Ramadan and the summer as well.

Prime Minister's energy advisor Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, Bir Bikram, addressed the meeting as the chief guest with State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid in the chair.

The meeting suggested for ensuring and increasing gas supply to power plants and taking necessary arrangements for power generation as per peak hour (evening) demand.

Aware about load shedding, the meeting said all concerned to avoid load shedding during Iftar, Tarabi prayers and Sehri time and informed consumers before load shedding.

Distribution companies would check and replace all overloaded transformers and keep necessary transformers in the storage, it said.

"The power situation must be kept normal. Unnecessary electricity wastage cannot be accepted, even if we have the capacity," Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury said.

He said those who are engaged in power generation or other emergency works they have to receive corona vaccine.

Nasrul Hamid said that consumers should not be harassed regarding the bill, adding that "Overload anomalies to be resolved quickly. Increase customer engagement in distribution activities in required."

The virtual meeting was addressed, among others, by energy secretary Md Anisur Rahman, power secretary Md Habibur Rahman, chairman of Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) Engineer Belayet Hossain, chairman of Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) Major General (retd) Moin Uddin, chairman of Petrobangla ABM Abdul Fattah and director general of Power Cell Engineer Mohammad.

A power point presentation was screened on demand, generation and distribution of electricity in the meeting.

Heads of departments of various organizations were also joined the meeting.
