Election to be held on time, govt fully prepared to deal with any challenges: CA tells US special envoy
The half-hour discussion covered a range of issues, including Bangladesh–US trade and tariff negotiations and the upcoming general election
The interim government is fully prepared to address any challenges and ensure a free, fair and peaceful national elections slated for 12 February 2026, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today (22 December).
"Supporters of the ousted autocratic regime are spending millions of dollars to disrupt the electoral process and their fugitive leader is inciting violence. However, the government is 'fully prepared' to deal with any challenges," he said during a telephone conversation with Sergio Gor, the US special envoy for South and Central Asia, at around 7:30pm (Dhaka time).
He also noted that the nation is eagerly waiting to exercise their voting rights, which were stolen by the autocratic regime.
According to the Chief Adviser's Press Wing, the half-hour discussion covered a range of issues, including Bangladesh–US trade and tariff negotiations, the forthcoming general election, the country's democratic transition, and the killing of young political activist Sharif Osman Hadi.
Sergio Gor, who also serves as the US ambassador to India, congratulated Professor Yunus on his leadership during recent trade talks, noting Bangladesh's success in reducing US reciprocal tariffs on Bangladeshi exports to 20 percent.
The US envoy also discussed the massive funeral of Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha and a prominent figure in the July movement.
"We have roughly 50 days to go before the election. We want to hold a free, fair and peaceful election. We want to make it remarkable," the chief adviser said.
Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin, National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman, and SDG Coordinator and Senior Secretary Lamiya Morshed were also present during the call.
