Tk12,300cr budget approved for UGC and public universities
For FY2026–27, Dhaka University has received the highest revenue budget allocation of Tk949.36 crore.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved a budget of Tk12,300 crore for 58 public universities and the commission for the 2026–27 fiscal year.
The approval was given at the 178th full commission meeting of the UGC today (11 June).
Of the approved budget, Tk12,001.82 crore has been allocated for the 58 public universities and Tk298.58 crore for the UGC.
Out of the total allocation for public universities, Tk7,428.43 crore has been set aside for operational expenses, while Tk4,573.39 crore has been earmarked for development costs covering 43 development projects.
In the revised budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year, 57 public universities were allocated Tk10,802.21 crore.
Accordingly, the allocation for the next fiscal year has increased by Tk1,497.83 crore.
For FY2026–27, Dhaka University has received the highest revenue budget allocation of Tk949.36 crore.
In addition, a total of Tk238 crore has been allocated for higher education research and foreign scholarships, of which Tk226 crore will go to research and Tk12 crore to foreign scholarships.
Under a decision to consolidate research funding, Tk200 crore from university research allocations has been incorporated into the UGC budget.
The UGC said that although research funds are now centrally allocated, university research activities will not be affected; rather, transparency and efficiency will improve.
UGC Chairman Dr Mamun Ahmed said that although the allocation is insufficient compared to the needs of the country's universities, higher education will benefit if spending is done transparently and based on priorities.
He also emphasised the need to increase funding for research and innovation.
