Secondary school heads demand 6th grade salary

The heads of Bangladesh secondary educational institutions have demanded an upgrade of their salaries to 6th grade – from the existing 8th grade – like the head teachers of government schools.

They demanded this at a press conference arranged at the National Press Club on Friday on the occasion of launching their organisation, the Council of Bangladesh Secondary Educational Institutions' Heads.

At the programme, the leaders of the platform placed a 13-point demand and highlighted the platform's 14 goals and objectives – aimed at improving the quality of education and professional skills.

In a written statement, Mojibur Rahman Babul, member secretary of the organisation, said, in a view exchange meeting held on 10 October, 2020, the heads of secondary level institutions across Bangladesh unanimously decided to form this organisation to eliminate inequality in the field of secondary education.

Mentioning that a 100-member convening committee was formed to commemorate the birth centenary of Mujib, he said due to Covid-19, it was not possible to have a formal inauguration of the organisation. "However, we have already formed convening committees in more than 40 districts," he added. 

Other demands include: a 100% festival allowance; a house rent and medical allowance as per the rules; the arrangement for 30% deputation of teachers; reforming the managing committee as recommended by the International Labour Organization and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization; ensuring the transfer of teaching staff in the light of national education policy; and providing adequate in-service training to teachers.

Joint conveners Dulal Chandra Chowdhury, Mohammad Shafiuddin and Masum Billah, as well as heads of various secondary schools of the country, were also present.
