Retiree Shireen Akhter reappointed as Chittagong University VC

The Chittagong University has reappointed Prof Dr Shireen Akhtar as the vice-chancellor (VC) after her tenure as the VC and a teacher of Bangla Department at the same institution ended on Thursday.

President and the university's Chancellor Abdul Hamid reappointed Dr Shireen, said an official notice signed by Nur-e-Alam, deputy secretary of Secondary and Higher Education Division under the education ministry.

The notice added that the Faculty of Fine Arts' Dean Prof Dr Mahibul Aziz will carry out routine duties of the vice-chancellor from 9am to 4pm on Thursday, and reappointed VC Dr Shireen will resume her duties immediately after that period.

But the notice did not mention how long Dr Shireen would hold the position of Chittagong University's vice-chancellor.

When contacted, the institution's Registrar (acting) Prof SM Monirul Hasan said, "Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Shireen Akhtar retired on Thursday morning after her tenure ended. She will resume her duties as vice-chancellor again from the same afternoon.

"The position of vice-chancellor cannot remain vacant. So, Faculty of Fine Arts' Dean Prof Dr Mahibul Aziz will perform this function in the meantime."
