Mamun Ahmed made UGC chairman after SMA Faiz resigns
In a letter to the education secretary today, Professor SMA Faiz said his current health condition has made it difficult for him to continue performing his duties.
Professor Mamun Ahmed, the current pro-vice-chancellor of DU, is set to assume the position of chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon confirmed the appointment at a press conference at the Ministry of Education today (16 March).
Earlier today, Professor SMA Faiz sought exemption from the post of UGC chairman, citing physical illness.
In a letter sent to the secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education, he said his current health condition has made it difficult for him to continue performing his duties.
In the letter, Professor Faiz noted that he assumed the responsibility of chairman of the UGC on 5 September 2024 in accordance with a notification issued by the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education.
However, he wrote that due to his current physical illness, it is not possible for him to carry out the responsibilities of the post.
He therefore requested that the authorities take the necessary steps to exempt him from the position of UGC chairman.
The letter has been submitted to the secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division. Relevant sources said further administrative steps will be taken based on the ministry's decision.
The University Grants Commission of Bangladesh is responsible for overseeing universities in the country, including policy matters and the development of the higher education system.
