Govt appoints new VCs to 11 public universities
Although the Ministry of Education initially issued notifications appointing VCs to 12 universities, one order was later cancelled
The government has appointed new vice-chancellors (VCs) to 11 public universities, including Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), as part of an ongoing reshuffle in university leadership.
The Ministry of Education issued separate gazette notifications today (14 May) appointing academics from various institutions to the posts.
The universities receiving new vice-chancellors are: Buet; Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET) in Gazipur; Islamic University; University of Barishal; Noakhali Science and Technology University; Comilla University; Rangamati Science and Technology University; Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University; Jamalpur Science and Technology University; Pabna University of Science and Technology; and Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University.

In the cancelled notification, Professor Anisur Rahman of the Marketing Department at University of Dhaka had been appointed vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur.
New appointments
Professor Ekramul Haque of the Civil Engineering Department at Buet has been appointed as the university's 16th vice-chancellor, replacing Professor Abu Borhan Mohammad Badruzzaman.
At Islamic University, Professor AKM Matinur Rahman of the Public Administration Department has been appointed VC.
Professor MM Shariful Karim of the English Department at Comilla University has been appointed as its new VC.
Professor Zainul Abedin Siddique of the Chemistry Department at the University of Chittagong has been appointed VC of Rangamati Science and Technology University.
Professor Mohammad Iqbal of the Industrial and Production Engineering Department at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology has been appointed VC of DUET. He is currently serving as VC of North East University Bangladesh.
Professor Md Mamun Or Rashid, dean of the Faculty of Oceanography at Patuakhali Science and Technology University, has been appointed VC of the University of Barishal.
Professor Golam Rabbani of the Institute of Social Welfare and Research at the University of Dhaka has been appointed VC of Noakhali Science and Technology University.
Professor Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, pro-vice-chancellor of Jamalpur Science and Technology University, has been appointed VC of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University.
Professor ABM Shahidul Islam of the Marketing Department at the University of Dhaka has been appointed VC of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University.
Professor Abul Hasnat Md Shamim of the School of Agricultural and Rural Development at Bangladesh Open University has been appointed VC of Pabna University of Science and Technology.
Professor Mohammad Amir Hossain Bhuiyan of the Environmental Science Department at Jahangirnagar University has been appointed VC of Jamalpur Science and Technology University.
According to the gazette notifications, the tenure of the vice-chancellors will be four years from the date of joining or until the end of their service period, whichever comes earlier.
The notifications also state that, as chief executive officers of their respective universities, the vice-chancellors are required to remain present on campus full-time.
