Ducsu leader attempts to detain teacher for calling 'secret meeting' on campus
A leader of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) attempted to detain and hand over to police Sociology Professor AKM Jamal for allegedly holding a "secret meeting" on campus today (11 December).
Jamal then left the campus after being chased by Ducsu Social Services Secretary AB Jubayer. Sociology Professor Zeenat Huda was with him at the time.
The incident occurred around 2pm at the Faculty of Social Sciences building, a video of which later spread on social media where Jubayer was seen attempting to restrain Professor Jamal on the department's staircase to hand him over to the police.
When Professor Jamal tried to get away, his hoodie was pulled off. He then ran down the stairs, and although efforts were made to hold onto his car door, he eventually left the campus by car.
Speaking to The Business Standard, Jubayer said the two teachers were in a meeting when he and others intervened.
"We called the proctor but couldn't reach him. The dean of the relevant faculty and the administration will be brought under accountability," he said.
Last year, students of the sociology department boycotted classes and examinations of Professor Jamal and Zeenat, accusing them of labeling students involved in the Anti-discrimination Student Movement as Jamaat-Shibir, threatening them with lawsuits, and several other allegations.
Earlier today, in a Facebook post, Jubayer alleged that Professor Jamal, Zeenat, and five other teachers "associated with fascists" had gone to campus for a secret meeting.
He wrote that they attempted to hand them over to the police but the teachers managed to escape in a car.
Attempts to reach Professor Jamal by phone were unsuccessful.
However, Professor Zinat Huda denied the allegation of holding a meeting.
She told TBS in the afternoon that they had gone to meet the vice chancellor to submit a memorandum regarding the university's current situation.
"The VC was in an urgent meeting. So we went to the teachers' lounge for tea, where other faculty members were present. While we were leaving, they attacked us," she said.
