DU boosts campus security with round-the-clock police presence

As part of heightened security measures, Dhaka University will have a round-the-clock police presence at the TSC and Vice Chancellor's premises starting today (25 June).

In addition, police will continue joint patrols with the university's proctorial team along the campus's main roads.

The decision was made during a meeting held ahead of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election.

The meeting, chaired by DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan, included university officials and representatives from law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

The meeting was attended by Proctor Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed and DMP Ramna Zone Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam, among others.

According to a statement from the university's Public Relations Office, the deployment follows recent security concerns, including the discovery of a cocktail-like object near the Shahid Buddhijibe Dr Muhammad Mortaza Medical Centre.

A university probe committee is investigating the incident, while police have launched a separate inquiry. Authorities hope to arrest those responsible soon.

Meanwhile, in response to firecracker explosions near the Raju Sculpture yesterday, a GD has been filed with the Shahbagh Police Station. CCTV footage has been handed over to the police, and joint efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the culprits, the statement reads.

The statement also cited police sources confirming that the investigation into the murder of DU student Shahriar Alam Shammo is nearing completion, with a charge sheet expected soon.

Progress is also being made in the investigation of Tofazzal's killing, with PBI nearly done with its probe. A hearing in that case is scheduled for 24 July, it added.
