DSCC-DU and BUET join forces for cleaner, dengue-free campuses

As part of its special cleanliness and mosquito control programme, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) led a major drive on Thursday, covering the Dhaka University (DU), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) campuses.
An eviction drive was also carried out from Anandabazar intersection to Central Shaheed Minar, targeting the removal of illegal structures and makeshift shops from the pavement adjacent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Md Shahjahan Mia, Administrator of DSCC, attended the drive. Md Rezaul Maksud Zahedi, Secretary of the Local Government Division, Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, and Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan, Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, were also present as special guests.
The cleanliness operation commenced at 6:00am. Around 1,300 workers from DSCC's Waste Management and Health divisions, DUCSU members and campus cleaners took part. Drains, sewers, pavements and other public areas were cleared of waste, and mosquito repellents were sprayed. The drive also featured a public awareness rally.
Md Rezaul Maksud Zahedi told journalists, "From today, we will continue removing illegal and extraneous structures to keep campuses as clean as those in developed countries". He urged the media to help raise public awareness on dengue prevention and waste management.
DSCC Administrator Md Shahjahan Mia said, "The campus administrations and DSCC will work together for cleaner, healthier environments at Dhaka University, BUET and Dhaka Medical College".
He noted that the actual number of dengue cases in Dhaka South is lower than the figures reported by the Directorate General of Health Services, as patients from across the country often come to major hospitals in the DSCC area. He added that measures are being taken to ensure a clean and orderly hospital environment, including a strict ban on unauthorised street businesses in front of Dhaka Medical College.
Others present included DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md Zahirul Islam, Secretary Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, DUCSU Vice-President Md Abu Sadiq and representatives from BUET and DMC.
