A truck driver and his assistant were killed when their vehicle was struck by a train at the Ghoraghat rail crossing in Birampur upazila of Dinajpur early Monday.

The deceased have been identified as truck driver Mahbubur Rahman and helper Arif Hossain, both residents of Bhajanpur village in Panchagarh's Tetulia upazila.

Md Fakhrul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Parbatipur Railway Police Station, said that at around 1 am, a stone-laden truck traveling from Birampur was crossing the Ghoraghat railway crossing when it was struck by the Dhaka-bound intercity Ekota Express Train.

The collision left the truck twisted, and both the driver and the helper were killed on the spot.

On information, police recovered the bodies, he added.

A case will be filed regarding the accident, said the OC.

Locals Matiar Rahman and Azibor Rahman claimed that the accident occurred because the gateman in charge of the railway crossing failed to lower the handrail at the rail gate. The gateman has been absconding since the incident.

Train services were temporarily suspended overnight due to the accident but have resumed normal operations since morning.

However, the truck blocking the road caused a long traffic jam, halting vehicle movement on the Dinajpur-Dhaka routes.
