DIU student builds low-cost desalination plant for homes
Inventor Fahim said the cost could be slashed in half if the plants are produced industrially
A student of the Daffodil International University (DIU) has built a desalination plant for household use with an affordable budget of only Tk 6,000.
The cost could be further slashed in half if the plants are produced industrially, claimed inventor of the plant Gazi Fahimuzzaman- a student of the Environmental Science and Disaster Management Department of the university.
Fahim presented his desalination plant project at the “International Clean Technology Fair-2019.”

The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industries (DCCI) and METABUILD jointly organised the event, which was held from June 26 to 27 at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in Dhaka.
“The desalination technology is not new, but my micro-level device is the first of its kind meant for household use,” said Fahim, who wanted to innovate something for the families living in coastal areas of the country.
Coastal areas in Bangladesh takes up around 20 percent of the country, of which about 53 percent are affected by various degrees of salinity. Fahim’s household plant separates salt from liquid and provides drinkable water at a cheap cost.
Around 70 individuals and organizations, including Fahim participated in the fair, showcasing their innovations, products and technology.
The project manager of METABUILD Khandoker Anwar Kamal said the goal event is to bring the industry owners and suppliers of clean technology together. Presently, METABUILD is working with 250 metal and steel industries, advocating for clean and efficient energy usage.
