Incumbent govt upholds anti-fascist spirit of July Uprising: AG

Attorney General Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal today (10 April) said the July mass uprising had sparked an anti-fascist spirit in the country and the current government upholds that spirit.

"The expectation of the people to build an anti-fascist state through the July revolution is being clearly upheld by the current government's commitment. The government is moving forward to realise that spirit. In the meantime, an indemnity policy for the 'July fighters' has already been formulated," he said.

The AG made the remarks while speaking to the reporters after addressing a view-exchange meeting with local dignitaries at the Kotchandpur Pilot High School ground in Jhenaidah this morning.

Replying to a question on the judgment of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 in Abu Sayed killing case, the attorney general said the tribunal came up with the verdict based on evidence.

"The aggrieved party has the legal right to appeal against the verdict. The government or the accused may file an appeal within the next 30 days," he added.

Kazal further said that the accused persons have always claimed their innocence. However, the aggrieved party should present their arguments before the court rather than reacting in the media.

On the independence of the judiciary, he said, "The government is committed to establishing a separate secretariat for the judiciary. The law minister has already clarified the government's position on this matter in parliament. Therefore, we would like to place full confidence in the government's stance regarding the independence of the judiciary."

He also said that the High Court has delivered a verdict regarding the establishment of a separate secretariat for the judiciary, but it is not yet final. The matter will be conclusively settled after the disposal of the appeal in the Supreme Court.
