Case filed after Jubo League stages flash rally in Gazipur, death threats alleged
Police say a case has been filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act after a group of Jubo League activists staged a sudden procession and threatened on-duty officers.
Police have filed a case after a group of banned Jubo League activists staged a flash rally in Gazipur and reportedly issued death threats to on-duty police officers.
The incident took place yesterday (21 June) in the Bhogra Bypass area along the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, according to police and local sources.
Witnesses said around 20 to 25 people brought out a sudden procession under the banner of Jubo League. Tensions rose when police moved to disperse the gathering, with participants allegedly threatening law enforcement personnel.
Video footage of the incident, which has since circulated on social media, shows a man leading the procession and making aggressive remarks directed at police officers while warning them not to advance.
Police sources identified the individual as Rakib Sarkar, joint convener of Gazipur Metropolitan Jubo League and former husband of actress Mahia Mahi.
According to the same sources, Rakib recently returned to Bangladesh after staying in India following the events of 5 August last year.
Police also alleged that he had been involved in activities aimed at creating instability and claimed that some of those efforts were financially supported by former Gazipur mayor Jahangir Alam, who is currently in Kolkata.
Following the incident, Gazipur Metropolitan Police filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act against those allegedly involved in the procession and threats.
Law enforcers said several suspects have already been identified and efforts are underway to arrest them.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Israil Hossain Haldar said police had identified individuals who participated in the flash rally and threatened officers.
"They are members of the Jubo League and Chhatra League. A case has been filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. A special drive is underway. No one will be spared," he said.
Police said additional personnel have been deployed in the Bhogra Bypass area and its surroundings to prevent any further unrest.
The situation remained under close monitoring as of Saturday night, according to law enforcement officials.
