Direct cargo flights from Sylhet to Europe begin Sunday
This marks not just the commencement of a new air route, but the dawn of a new era of opportunity, says a commerce ministry official

The government is set to inaugurate its first international cargo freighter service, directly transporting goods from Sylhet's Osmani International Airport to Europe.
Commerce and Civil Aviation and Tourism Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin will officially launch the inaugural flight on SUnday (27 April).
The commerce adviser earlier highlighted the urgency of this initiative, stating that Bangladesh's export costs are projected to increase by approximately Tk2,000 crore following India's recent cancellation of transhipment facilities for Bangladeshi goods, effective from 8 April.
In response, the government is prioritising the establishment of direct cargo services, beginning with Osmani International Airport, to mitigate any disruption to Bangladesh's exports. Plans are also underway to launch a similar facility from Cox's Bazar Airport soon.
Commerce ministry officials said the cargo flight from Osmani International Airport will directly transport goods to European destinations.
"This marks not just the commencement of a new air route, but the dawn of a new era of opportunity," an official told The Business Standard.
"This initiative will seamlessly integrate regional development, international trade, diaspora connections, and national prestige, culminating in comprehensive success," he added.
The commerce ministry underscores the significant economic potential of the Sylhet region, noting its diverse range of exportable products, including tea, fruits, vegetables, fish, handicrafts, and processed foods.
