Dhanmondi sees spike in mugging

The Dhanmondi area of the capital has recently witnessed a surge in mugging incidents, reaching alarming levels.

Locals said a youth was brutally attacked with a machete near house No 83 at the intersection of Dhanmondi 11/A, in front of Junior Laboratory School at about 11:50pm yesterday (2 December).

The attackers, four in number, arrived on two motorbikes and attacked the victim, a rickshaw passenger, stealing his mobile phone and cash before fleeing the scene.

Bystanders quickly took the injured youth to Bangladesh Medical College Hospital.

Ershadul Haque Tinku, a witness, reported the incident by dialing the emergency hotline 999.

In response, he said, a sub-inspector (SI) of Dhanmondi Police Station promptly visited the crime scene to initiate an investigation.

Another witness, Mostafiz, a night guard of house 86/A, verified the incident.

He said that CCTV cameras at house 83 likely captured the muggers' motorbike registration numbers and other identifying details, which could assist law enforcement in tracking them down.

Locals have expressed growing concern over the deteriorating security situation in Dhanmondi, with many calling for urgent and effective measures by law enforcement agencies to restore safety in the area.

Talking to the UNB correspondent, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dhanmondi Police Station Md Anwar Hossain said, "A police team visited the site last night. We are in the process of collecting CCTV footage to identify the perpetrators. The injured victim has not yet lodged a formal complaint. Once he does, we will take legal action."
