Since most of the people who left Dhaka for the Eid vacation have now returned to the capital, public and private hospitals across the city have witnessed a hike in dengue infections in the last 24 hours when compared to elsewhere in the country.

The number of dengue patients increased in different districts outside Dhaka during the holidays.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 757 people were identified with dengue in Dhaka compared to 858 elsewhere in the country from 8 am Sunday to 8 am Monday.

However, during the previous 24 hours, 734 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka compared to 972 outside Dhaka.

The DGHS says altogether 6,733 dengue patients are being treated across the country at present, out of which 3,419 are in Dhaka and 3,314 are elsewhere.

This year, 54,798 people have been admitted to hospital after being infected with dengue. Among them, 84 percent have returned home.

Five more die of dengue

At least five people died of dengue across the country on Monday.

They are Mizanur Rahman, 40, from Khulna, Anowar Hossain, 40, from Netrakona, Delower Hossein, 35, from Faridpur, Fatema Akhter, 45, from Dhaka, and Sumaya, 18, from Barishal.

According to the DGHS, the death toll has risen to 40 this year, but private sources claim that the figure has exceeded 140.
