Debapriya stresses policy implementation through national programmes
Debapriya said policy proposals have been put forward across various sectors, from the macroeconomy to education, health and social protection.
Merely talking about policies, frameworks or values is not enough to address the country's development challenges; what is needed are specific programmes and effective implementation mechanisms, according to Debapriya Bhattacharya, convener of Citizen's Platform for SDGs, Bangladesh.
Speaking at a media briefing organised by the Citizen's Platform today at Lakeshore Hotel, he said, experience shows that aspirations for development or policy statements alone do not translate into reality. Clear directions and concrete programmes are required on how policies will be implemented. That is why, alongside sector-wise policies, the Citizen's Platform has taken the initiative to formulate specific national programmes.
Debapriya said policy proposals have been put forward across various sectors, from the macroeconomy to education, health and social protection. However, stressing that policy rhetoric alone is insufficient, he said, "For the first time, we are presenting several national programmes that will help implement these policies."
Referring to inclusive development, he said, "The programmes reflect the kind of development advocated by the Citizen's Platform. Responsibility does not end with offering advice alone; ensuring monitoring and accountability in implementing those recommendations is equally important."
"To this end, the Citizen's Platform has presented a monitoring report through which the implementation of its recommendations will be tracked," Debapriya added.
He said that how political parties include—or do not include—the Citizen's Platform proposals in their election manifestos will also be brought under monitoring and accountability, describing this as a new reality for Bangladesh.
Highlighting the role of women, Debapriya said women in Bangladesh are now more aware and empowered than ever before.
He expressed hope that this conscious and capable citizenry will act as a watchdog in the country's future democratic transition.
