Cucsu election: Separate polling centre set up for disabled students
Visually impaired students demanded a Braille voting system instead, saying they did not want another person to cast their votes on their behalf
The Election Commission for the Chittagong University Central Students' Union (Cucsu) and Hall Union elections has announced the establishment of a separate polling centre for students with disabilities.
The polling will take place on the second floor of the Cucsu building, to ensure accessibility and convenience for voters.
The announcement was formally made today (13 October), in a notice signed by Prof AKM Ariful Haque Siddiqui, election commissioner and member-secretary of the Cucsu and Hall Union Election Commission.
"In response to requests from visually impaired students, the Chief Election Commissioner, in consultation with other commissioners, has decided to set up a separate polling centre to facilitate their participation in the election," the notice read.
"Two election commissioners will oversee the voting process for visually impaired students, alongside the designated election officials inside the polling booth."
Student disappointment over method
However, some students have expressed disappointment over the decision.
Akash Das, a visually impaired student from the Department of Sociology (2021–22), said, "We had requested the use of the Braille system for voting. We did not want another person to cast our votes. The administration has already made its decision, and nothing more can be done now."
