Police have arrested a ninth-grader in Chattogram for allegedly murdering his second-grader niece after raping her.

The minor girl was raped and murdered on Sunday, and the suspect was arrested early on Monday.

The victim Nipu, 8, was a second-grader at a local kindergarten; while the suspect, Md Ramzan Ali Choton, 16, is a ninth-grader at Halishohor Begumjan High School.

The suspect and his family live in a building adjacent to the home of the victim.

Nipu’s mother Hazera Bibi is a garment worker and her father is a day labourer. The girl used to drop by the home of the suspect on her way back from school.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, Md Arefin Juwel, talked to the media about the case.

He said Ramzan raped Nipu on Sunday while no one else was home. When the minor girl fainted, the uncle strangled her to death.

“Then he hung her body from the ceiling fan with a scarf, staging it as a suicide,” said the policeman. The ADC also claimed that Ramzan confessed to the crime during initial investigation.
