A woman was stabbed to death allegedly by her own brother-in-law in the Kamalapur area of the capital today (6 April).

The woman was identified as Ayesha Khan Moni, 44.

The incident took place around 10:30am at a house on South Kamalapur Cemetery Lane, while Ayesha was visiting her ailing mother-in-law, said Mejbah Uddin, officer in-charge of Motijheel Police Station.

Ayesha was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared her dead around 12:30pm.

Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the police outpost at DMCH confirmed the death and said the body has been kept in the hospital morgue for autopsy.

Quoting family members, police said Ayesha was attacked by her brother-in-law Masud Hawlader, 47, with a sharp weapon in front of the house.

Md Abu Zafar, another brother-in-law of the deceased, told journalists that he and the accused masud live in their ancestral house in Kamalapur while their elder brother, the husband of Ayesha, lives in another house in that area with his family.

"Today, she [Ayesha] came to visit our mother. Masud suddenly started stabbing her with a sharp weapon in front of the house. Then he fled from the scene," Zafar said.

Primary investigation suggests that the murder may have stemmed from family conflict, OC Mejbah Uddin said.

"Relatives are trying to portray the accused as mentally ill. However, we have not found any such medical record so far," he added.
