Woman 'gang-raped' in Cumilla; 4 arrested
Police say five were involved in the attack; victim rescued after husband alerted emergency services
A woman was allegedly abducted from her husband and gang-raped by a group in Chandina upazila of Cumilla while the couple was on their way to visit relatives. Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the incident.
The incident took place last night (3 May) in Kamar Khola village under Maijkhar union of the upazila.
The arrested are Md Ashik, 31, son of Shahjahan Mia of Madarpur village; Mehedi Hasan Tarek, 24, son of Alamgir Hossain; Md Arif, 34, son of Almas Mia and Md Ismail, 37, son of late Joynal Abedin, all residents of Chandina.
Confirming the matter, Chandina Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Atikur Rahman said five people were involved in the incident.
"Two of them directly raped the victim, while others were waiting. Police reached the scene quickly and arrested four suspects," he said.
He also said efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspect who fled.
A case has been filed with the police station by the victim. She has been sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for medical examination under the one-stop crisis service.
According to police and the victim's family, the couple, residents of Barura upazila, set out around 9pm on a battery-run auto-rickshaw for a relative's house in Madarpur village.
Around 10pm, the vehicle ran out of charge near Kamar Khola village, forcing them to push it on foot.
At that time, three youth on a motorcycle intercepted them and later called two more accomplices, police said.
"They dragged my wife to a nearby cornfield while one of them took me away and left me in the dark," the victim's husband said. He later called the national emergency number 999, prompting police to rescue the woman.
The victim alleged that she was raped by the attackers in turns.
