Cumilla police have arrested one suspect over the alleged gang-rape of a young woman in the district's Lalmai upazila.
The reported incident took place in an under-construction building in Pohonkucha village under Bagmara union (south) yesterday (6 March), Lalmai Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shah Alam told The Business Standard today (7 March).
"One of the suspects, Jahangir, 35, has been arrested, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the other suspect," he said.
OC Alam further said the victim will undergo medical tests at Cumilla Medical College Hospital on Saturday.
"The victim's father filed a case yesterday, naming two accused," the OC added.
According to the victim's family, she has both physical and speech disabilities. Yesterday, around 7:30am, she left home when Jahangir allegedly offered her a packet of chips from a roadside shop.
He then tricked her into entering a labourers' room inside a nearby under-construction building.
Upon learning about the situation, locals rushed to the spot and found Jahangir and other accused Bahar Mia, 50, assaulting the victim. Both suspects managed to escape from the scene.
