A teenage girl was raped in a bus in the capital's Mirpur area on Tuesday night while she was travelling to visit a relative in the Aminbazar area of Savar.

Police arrested Rafi, the bus driver, and his helper Biddian on Wednesday night from Mirpur.

Both of them gave confessional statements before a metropolitan magistrate court on Thursday admitting their involvement in the rape.

The girl is in police safe custody now and will be sent to a victim support centre in Gazipur, said Jahidur Rahman, an inspector (operations) of Shah Ali Police Station in the capital.

Police said that aged between 15-16 years, the girl works at a readymade garment factory (RMG), and lives in the Pallabi area with a family.

On Tuesday, the girl rode on a bus of Shatabdi Paribahan, which plies between Abdullahpur and Mirpur National Zoo, to go to Aminbazar to visit a relative.

The accused, however, misguided her and kept her sitting on the bus. After the other passengers got off from the bus, they raped her, said Jahidur.

Later, they threw her off the bus at Mirpur-1 Chinese Restaurant area, where the locals rescued her and dialed emergency hotline '999' for immediate support.

Being informed, police members of Shah Ali Police Station took her to a local hospital for treatment.

The victim filed a case against three staff members of the bus. Police arrested two of the people and the victim identified them, said Muhammad Asaduzzaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shah Ali Police Station. Another accused bus staff member is on the run, the OC added.
