Tobacco worth Tk25 lakh seized in Chattogram for evading VAT, duty

The Customs, Excise & VAT Commissionerate has seized chewing tobacco worth Tk25 lakh in Chattogram for evading value added tax (VAT) and supplementary duty amounting to Tk 10 lac.

A team from the Argabad Division under the Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate in Chattogram seized the tobacco on Saturday during a raid on an organisation called Nirapad Transport and Parcel Service.

Deputy Commissioner of Agrabad VAT Department Shahinur Kabir Pavel said, "The initial investigation revealed that Nirapad Transport and Parcel Service had sent 17 cartoons of chewing tobacco to some individuals and officials of various areas including Chaktai, Dohazari, of Chattogram and various places in Rangamati.

The organisation sent the item form its Jatrabari branch, which had no documents of vat payment.

Necessary legal action is being taken against the gang in accordance with the VAT Act, added Shahinur.
