As much as 196 bottles of soya bean oil and 73 sacks of sugar meant for selling at fair prices under the government's Open Market Sale (OMS) programme have been seized from a businessman's storage facility at Inatganj Bazar in Nabiganj upazila under Habiganj district.

Each of the bottles contained 5 litres of soya bean oil and each sack contained 50 kilograms of sugar.

Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, Nabiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Bishwajit Kumar Pal said acting on a tip-off that businessman Noman was illegally selling goods from the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh in the open market they had operated the drive on Thursday night and seized the products.

During the 5-hour drive at several warehouses and shop of Noman, illegal Indian cigarettes were also seized.

Because Inatganj Bazar covers Nabiganj and Jaggannathpur upazilas under Habiganj and Sunamganj districts respectively, the drive was conducted jointly by the two upazila administrations.

Getting information about the drive, Noman Hossain fled away. However, his brother Anan Hossain and four workers of his shop were detained in this connection.

The detainees were later handed over to Nabiganj police by Jagannathpur police.
