Stepfather killed Narsingdi teen, tried to frame rape suspects: Police
Police say the teen had been gang-raped earlier in February, and the stepfather allegedly planned the killing after a local arbitration over the incident triggered social humiliation.
Police have uncovered the mystery behind the killing of the 15-year-old girl in Narsingdi, revealing that her stepfather allegedly strangled her to death and later attempted to frame others to cover up the crime.
According to police, the victim's stepfather, Ashraf Ali, confessed during primary interrogation that he killed the girl and staged a false narrative to implicate alleged rapist Nur Mohammad alias Nura, and several others, reports Jamuna TV.
Narsingdi Superintendent of Police (SP) Abdullah Al-Faruk disclosed the information at a press conference held at the police superintendent's office yesterday afternoon (7 March).
He said Ashraf Ali, who had been on the list of suspects, was brought to the police station for questioning from Madhabdi on Thursday afternoon (6 March).
During interrogation he admitted his involvement in the killing and provided a confessional statement in court, the SP added.
According to the SP, the girl had earlier been gang-raped by Nura and several others on 10 February.
Following the incident, Ashraf became angry with his stepdaughter due to a local arbitration led by a former union member.
In an attempt to escape the humiliation surrounding the incident, Ashraf planned the murder, the SP added.
On the pretext of taking her to the house of a man named Sumon, he took the girl near a mustard field, where he pressed her neck and strangled her with her scarf, killing her.
To protect himself after the murder, Ashraf staged a false narrative and tried to shift the blame onto Nura and others, the SP said.
Earlier, on the morning of 25 February, police recovered the girl's body from a mustard field in Madhabdi with a scarf tied around her neck.
Later, the victim's mother Fahima Begum filed a case naming Nura as the main accused along with eight others.
So far, police have arrested eight people in connection with the incident.
On 1 March, a court granted an eight-day remand for seven of them. They admitted to the rape during interrogation.
