Sinha murder: 3 prime accused including OC Pradeep on fresh remand

A Cox's Bazar court on Friday placed three prime accused including Pradeep Kumar Das, suspended officer-in-charge of Teknaf police station, on a three-day fresh remand in a case filed over the murder of retired army major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan.

The two other accused are suspended inspector Liaqat Ali and sub-inspector Nanda Dulal Raxit.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Court (Teknaf-3) granted the remand for the third time after the trio were produced before the court upon completion of their second-term four-day remand, said Khairul Alam, Assistant Superintendent of Police at the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab)-15 and also the investigating officer of Sinha murder case.

Khairul also told The Business Standard that they sought a four-day fresh remand to question the accused to obtain further information regarding murder but a three-member panel of lawyers who appeared in the court from Chattogram opposed the remand plea and applied for bail of the three key accused.

However, Senior Judicial Magistrate Tamanna Farah rejected their bail plea and granted three more days to the investigating agency to grill the accused.

The same court granted a four-day remand in the second phase against seven policemen including Pradeep, Liaqat and Nanda Dulal on August 24 – the day when the accused were produced in the court after the completion of a seven-day remand in the first phase.

On the night of July 31, Major (retd) Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan was killed in police firing in Cox's Bazar Marine Drive.

Sinha's sister Sharmin Shahria Ferdous filed a case with the Teknaf Upazila Judicial Magistrate Court on August 5, accusing Teknaf police station OC Pradeep, Baharchhara check-post in-charge Liaqat and seven other policemen of killing his brother.

The following day, OC Pradeep surrendered before the court.
