Shaheed Minar demolished in Cumilla by unidentified individuals

A Shaheed Minar at a Cumilla college was demolished sometime after Thursday (20 February) midnight by unidentified individuals.
The incident took place at Gunabati Degree College campus in the early hours of Friday (21 February), according to the college administration and police.
According to college officials, marking the occasion of Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day, teachers and students of the college paid homage to martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement at 12:01am.
Later, local BNP leaders and activists paid their tributes at the Shaheed Minar on the college premises and left the campus at 12:30am.
At around 2:00am, loud noise could be heard from the college campus.
"When the college's night watchman went near the Shaheed Minar and saw that miscreants had broken 2 out of the 3 pillars of the monument," Gunabati Degree College Principal Abdul Latif told The Business Standard.
"We left after placing the flowers on the Shaheed Minar. Later, late at night, miscreants did this. The police arrived at the scene. I cannot say who did the incident," he added.
Speaking about this, Chauddagram Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hilal Uddin said the police are looking into the matter.
"However, as there are no CCTV cameras, it is not possible to confirm who demolished the Shaheed Minar right away. We suspect that local people were involved in the act," he said.
