A pregnant woman has been allegedly gang-raped in the South Keraniganj area of Dhaka on Saturday night (8 March), reports Prothom Alo.
The police have arrested two suspects in connection with the incident – Mohammad Ashraful and Dwip Sarkar, both auto-rickshaw drivers by profession.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of South Keraniganj Police Station, Mazharul Islam, told Prothom Alo that the woman had come to Dhaka a few days ago due to a dispute with her husband. She was looking for work and had taken shelter at a shrine.
According to the complaint, when she went to Keraniganj last night, three auto-rickshaw drivers promised to arrange accommodation and food for her. They allegedly took her to a room and gang-raped her. A case has been filed regarding the incident, he said.
The OC stated that after identifying the three individuals involved, two have been arrested, and efforts are underway to arrest the third. The victim has been sent to the One Stop Crisis Centre (OSCC) at Dhaka Medical College for a physical examination.
Citing police sources, Prothom Alo reports that the woman is from the Hindu community. She had married a Muslim man without informing her family. After a dispute with her husband, she went to her parental home, but her family did not allow her to stay. She then came to Dhaka in search of work. The woman has stated that she is four months pregnant.
