A woman, her daughter, and her eight-year-old son sustained burn injuries in an acid attack last night (3 July), allegedly carried out by a youth whose marriage proposal had been rejected by the family in Jashore's Jhikargacha upazila.
The victims have been identified as Rahela Begum, 48, her daughter Ripa Khatun, 26, and her minor son Yeanur, 8, of Gadkhali village under the upazila.
According to the victims' family, Ripa, who has been divorced for around four years, had been living with her parents along with her son after separating from her husband. Jasim, a worker employed by Fazlur Rahman from the nearby Mothbari village, had been persistently proposing marriage to Ripa, despite her repeated refusals.
"Angered by the rejection, Jasim threw acid through the window of their house around 8:30pm yesterday, targeting Ripa," said Ripa's uncle, Abdur Rahman. "As a result, Ripa, her brother Yeanur and mother Rahela all suffered acid burns," he added.
The injured were initially taken to Jhikargacha Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Jashore General Hospital for advanced treatment.
Dr Jubayer Ahmed, a medical officer at Jashore General Hospital, said, "The child, Yeanur, suffered severe acid burns on his legs and other parts of the body. His condition is critical. The mother and daughter also sustained partial burns and are under close observation."
Jhikargacha police station's Investigation Officer Abu Sayeed confirmed that law enforcement has launched an operation to arrest the accused.
"We are making every effort to detain the individual responsible for the attack," he added.
