Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered 26 gold bars worth around Tk6.4 crore from Jashore today (7 May) following a tip-off that a consignment of gold was being transported towards the district.
Three people were arrested at that time from the Nilganj bridge area of the town, confirmed Commanding Officer of BGB Lt Col Golam Mohammad Saiful Alam Khan.
The detainees were identified as Rony from Rajnagar village of Sharsha upazila, Abdul Gani from Koyerpara village in Chougachha upazila, and Israel from Bagdanga village of Jashore Sadar.
According to Saiful, a BGB team set up a checkpoint on the Jashore–Narail highway near Nilganj bridge after receiving intelligence about the shipment.
Officers stopped and searched a private car where they discovered 26 gold bars concealed inside specially modified seat cushions.
"The recovered gold weighed 3.048 kg and was estimated to be worth around Tk6.4 crore. Authorities also seized the vehicle allegedly used in the operation, five mobile phones and Tk7,327 in cash," he added.
During preliminary questioning, the suspects reportedly told investigators that the gold had been collected from smugglers operating in the Abdullahpur and Uttara areas of Dhaka.
The consignment was allegedly intended to be smuggled into India through the Jashore border. The suspects have since been handed over to Jashore Kotwali Model Police Station after a case was filed against them.
