Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) have arrested Ehteshamul Haque Bhola, a listed accused in the murder case of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of former police superintendent Babul Akter.
Bhola, described by police as an "infamous criminal," was arrested around 10:30pm on Wednesday (21 January) in front of Media Tower in the Kalpalok Residential Area under Bakalia Police Station.
Bakalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Solaiman confirmed the arrest. He said Bhola was detained as part of Operation Devil Hunt Phase-2.
"Keeping such criminals at large poses a risk to a fair election. That is why he has been arrested," the OC told The Business Standard, adding that Bhola would be produced before a court today (22 January).
Police sources said Bhola faced multiple allegations during the Awami League government, including land grabbing and extortion.
He also allegedly occupied land belonging to the Journalists' Housing Society in front of Media Tower, where he set up his office. Bhola came into focus after being named as an accused in the murder case of Mitu.
Mitu was killed on 5 June 2016 while she was going to drop her son off at a school bus near her residence on OR Nizam Road under Panchlaish Police Station.
She was shot and stabbed to death in broad daylight, triggering widespread public outrage and prolonged legal proceedings.
