Mitu murder key suspect Kalu arrested

Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested the key suspect in the murder case of the former police superintendent Babul Akter's wife Mahmuda Akhter Mitu.

He was arrested from Chattogram city's Akbar Shah area on Friday. Later, he was handed over to the Rangunia thana police.

According to the police, Kalu was on the run for seven years after the homicide. He was working as a security guard at a privately-owned property in the Akbar Shah area.

Mahbub Milky, the Officer in Charge (OC) of Rangunia thana, stated, "In addition to the Mitu murder case, Kalu was convicted of attacking the Rangunia police back in 2012 and was a runaway culprit." PBI has arrested him and handed him over to the Rangunia thana police on the basis of the latter case.

PBI has already submitted the charge sheet after investigating the Mitu murder case. However, that file accuses Mitu's husband of planning the murder. PBI claims that Kalu stabbed Mitu on the day of the murder.

Mitu was murdered on 5 June 2016 at GEC intersection in Chattogram while she was getting her son on the school bus. It is noteworthy that her husband, Babul, was transferred from Chattogram to Dhaka just a couple of days prior to that event. He was taken to Detective Branch (DB) police office from his in-law's Banasree house on 24 June of that year and interrogated for 14 hours. That incident sparked rumours that he might be the one who planned the homicide and hired the mercenaries to kill his wife. Surprisingly, after just a few days, he resigned from his role as a police superintendent.

Only two days after inquiring Babul, police arrested two individuals named Md. Anwar and Md Motalib Mia (AKA Wasim). In their deposition in front of the court, they mentioned the homicide was carried out according to Kamrul Islam Shikder Musa's plan. And that Nabi, Kalu, Musa, and Wasim were directly involved in the killing. Nabi and Kalu stabbed Mitu on the day of the murder.

The whereabouts of Musa remained unknown after the murder. His wife, Panna Akter, claimed at a press conference held at Chattogram Press Club on 4 July 2016 that her husband was kidnapped from a relative's house on 22 June of that year by some unidentified men hired by port city's former OC Mohiudin Selim.

However, the police denied this allegation and three months later on 6 October 2016, announced a bounty of a whopping Tk5 lakh to get informed about the whereabouts of former Commissioner Iqbal Bahar Musa and Kalu.

The PBI submitted an investigation report in May 2021 revealing Babul Akter's involvement in the murder. Then Mitu's father Mosharraf Hossen filed a new case against Babul as a plaintiff. The case is still in process as of now and Babul Akter has since been in prison.
