Man shot, hacked to death at Shaheed Minar in Dhaka
A person has been detained in connection with the incident.
A man died after being shot and hacked by unidentified individuals near the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka tonight (15 March).
The deceased was identified as Md Rakib, 25, a content creator and a second-year degree student at Sheikh Borhan Uddin College.
The incident took place around 9pm.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the police outpost at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said passersby rescued Rakib and rushed him to the emergency department of the hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment at around 10:30pm.
Masud Alam, deputy commissioner (Ramna division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said a person has been detained in connection with the incident.
Inspector Faruk said Rakib had one bullet wound to the head and two bullet wounds on the left and right sides of his back. In addition, he had injuries from sharp weapons at six to seven places on his body, Faruk added.
Rakib's friend, Md Rony, who was at the hospital, told reporters that he and several friends, including Rakib, were having tea at a stall near the Central Shaheed Minar at night.
"At one point, a man called Rakib aside and took him away. Shortly afterwards, we heard gunshots. When we rushed to the Shaheed Minar, we found Rakib lying on the ground in a pool of blood, with a bullet wound to the head and multiple hacking injuries on his body," he said.
Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Mithu Fakir said people present at the scene chased and caught one suspect, who is currently in police custody.
An investigation is underway, he added.
