Imam Tanvir allegedly committed multiple murders because of greed
Retired bank officer Abdul Jabbar used to treat Tanvir Islam – the imam of a local fire service mosque in Pabna – like a son.
However, Tanvir allegedly murdered the childless elderly man – along with his two other family members – because of uncontrolled greed for property.
Police, today, arrested Tanvir Islam over his alleged involvement in the murder.

Based on his confession, police have also recovered sharp weapons used in the murder, stolen money and gold ornaments from his possession.
Tanvir is the son of late Hatem Ali of Haripur village under Mahadevpur police station in Naogaon district.
On Sunday, Pabna Superintendent of Police Sheikh Rafiqul Islam briefed journalists at the District Police Lines Auditorium on how Tanvir allegedly committed the gruesome murder.
Abdul Jabbar, a retired officer of Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank, lived with his wife Summa Khatun and adopted daughter Sanjida, for a long time, on the ground floor of an old two-storey house adjacent to the fire service station.
Based on his acquaintance with Abdul Jabbar – as he used to offer prayers regularly at the mosque – Imam Tanvir got on well with the couple and mingled with them as though he was their son.
Abdul Jabbar also used to consult him on various issues, ranging from the home market to economic transactions. Tanvir gained their trust and spent nights in Abdul Jabbar's house at times.
"On May 31, Tanvir went to that house to sleep there. After dinner, followed by a family conversation, he, along with Abdul Jabbar, went to bed," said the superintendent.
"According to Tanvir's plan, Tanvir strangled Abdul Jabbar to death at midnight. Summa Khatun and Sanjida were asleep in the next room. Tanvir also ensured their deaths by hacking them with sharp weapons and beating them with sticks," he added.
"After the murder, Tanvir opened the cupboard and stole Tk2 lakh in cash, one lakh Indian rupees and gold jewellery. Later, he fled to Mahadevpur in Naogaon," continued the superintendent.
Police recovered the bodies of the three people from the house on June 5 – four days after the murder.
Tanvir was scheduled to be handed over to the court on Sunday afternoon after showing him arrested in the murder case filed by Summa Khatun's brother, Abdul Quader, at Pabna sadar police station.
