Fish worth an estimated Tk60 lakh have died after miscreants allegedly poisoned four leased fish ponds in Faridpur's Sadar upazila.
The incident occurred on Thursday night (28 May) in Narsinghdia village under Krishnanagar union, Faridpur Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahmudul Hasan confirmed.
"We have received allegations that poison was used to kill fish in the ponds. Police have inspected the area, and legal action will be taken after an investigation," the OC said.
The victim, Animesh Sarkar, a fish farmer who leases ponds in different areas for aquaculture, discovered the incident on Friday morning (29 May) when he visited the ponds.
According to local sources, unidentified individuals allegedly poured poison into the four ponds during the night.
As a result, fish of various species, including rui, katla, and tengra, died. Many of the fish weighed between one and six kilograms.
Speaking to reporters, Animesh said he had leased the ponds by borrowing money and investing his savings in fish farming.
"I have been ruined. Fish worth nearly Tk60 lakh have died in four ponds. I urge the authorities to identify those responsible and bring them under the law as soon as possible," he said.
Following the incident, Animesh filed a complaint with Faridpur Kotwali Police Station against unidentified individuals, OC Mahmudul said.
