Man claiming to be Jubo Dal leader arrested over extortion attempt at a Shyamoli hospital
Along with Moin, six others were also taken into custody, though their identities were not immediately disclosed
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Moin Uddin Moin, who claimed to be a Jubo Dal leader, in connection with a case filed over extortion attempts at the CKD & Urology Hospital in the capital's Shyamoli, owned by noted kidney specialist Dr Kamrul Islam.
RAB's Legal and Media Wing confirmed the arrest of Moin, the prime accused in the case, through a media notification today (13 April).
Along with Moin, six others were also taken into custody, though their identities were not immediately disclosed. Previously, four of Moin's associates -- Md Falan Mia, Md Rubel, Md Sumon, and Md Liton Mia -- were also arrested.
The arrest follows a series of intimidation incidents at the hospital.
According to hospital authorities, Moin, who resided in Shyamoli, had been supplying food to the facility since 5 August 2024, while identifying himself as an organising secretary of the Jubo Dal.
Tensions escalated recently after hospital management discovered that Moin had been charging inflated prices for supplies, notably for 25 sacks of rice delivered before Eid-ul-Fitr.
Following his removal as the supplier, Moin allegedly began threatening hospital staff and demanded Tk5 lakh from Dr Kamrul.
When the demand was refused, Moin reportedly attempted to force the physician and other staff out of the hospital, accusing Dr Kamrul of being a "crony" of the banned Awami League party.
The situation turned volatile on 10 April, when Moin gathered 60 to 70 people in front of the hospital to chant slogans against Dr Kamrul, forcing police to intervene.
A general diary had been filed with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station regarding the harassment about a month prior to the recent escalation.
Following media coverage of the incident, a delegation led by Jubo Dal President Abdul Monayem Munna and General Secretary Mohammad Nurul Islam Noyon visited the hospital in the early hours of 11 April.
The leadership clarified that Moin has no affiliation with the organisation, asserting that he was using the Jubo Dal's name for personal gain. They further urged law enforcement to take stern action against those involved in the extortion.
