A Jatiotabadi Jubo Dal activist was shot dead by a group of unidentified assailants in Raozan Upazila of Chattogram in the early hours today (20 April).

The incident took place in Garibullahpara village under Ward No 3 in the upazila's Bagoan Union at around 1:30am, according to locals and police.

Confirming the incident, Rauzan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monirul Islam Bhuiyan identified the victim as Muhammad Manik Abdullah (36), a resident of Garibullahpara and the son of Abdul Motaleb.

Manik was an activist of Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the BNP, and was known locally as a supporter of BNP Vice-Chairman Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury.

Locals said Manik had been living with his family in Chattogram city. Last night, he visited his village and was having dinner at a neighbour's house when a group of 12 to 15 armed men attacked. The assailants shot him at close range to ensure his death before fleeing the scene.

Police later recovered the body and sent it to Chattogram Medical College Hospital's morgue for autopsy.

Authorities have launched an investigation, though no arrests have been made as of this report.
