Husband confined, wife allegedly gang-raped at abandoned house of ex-minister’s relative in Cumilla

A woman has allegedly been raped twice at an abandoned house of ex-minister Md Tazul Islam's brother-in-law in Cumilla's Laksam upazila while her husband was held in confinement in a different place.
"Police have arrested five for raping and abetting the crime based on the complaints of the victim's family members. They will be sent to the court today," said Naznin Sultana, officer-in-charge of Laksam Police Station.
The five arrestees are- Mohammad Ali, 25, son of late Khalilur Rahman from Monoharpur area in Laksam upazila, Md Masud, 23, son of Md Momin from the municipality's Sreepur Madhyapara, Monir Hossain Hridoy, 23, son of Abu Taher from Batakhali area, Al Amin, son of late Siddiqur Rahman from Uttar Binoi area and Bilkis Akter Kalpana, wife of late Mostafiz Mazumdar from Madhya laksam area.
Naznin said the victim had been kept at the one-stop crisis centre at Comilla Medical College Hospital.
According to the case statement, the couple arrived at Laksam Sadar to visit the maternal grandfather of the victim's husband on Thursday (13 March).
On Friday (14 March), they got into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw to return home from the Laksam Bypass Intersection. At one point, the CNG driver suspected their marital status and took them to the Gandamara area in Laksam by deceit, the case statement said.
The accused checked the couple's bags there, after which they took the victim and her husband to the nearby Mogbari area of Lalmai upazila in a planned manner. They left the husband there, abducted the woman and took her to Laksam again, the case statement read.
The accused then took the woman to an abandoned house of Mohabbat Ali, who is the general secretary of Laksam upazila Awami League and brother-in-law of former LGRD minister Md Tazul Islam.
According to the case statement, the woman was raped by Md Masud and Mohammad Ali, two of the accused there.
On Saturday (15 March), the woman was taken to the rented house of one Bilkis Akhtar Kalpana, who was known to the accused, at ward no-8 of Laksam, where the victim was raped again.
Locals later rescued the woman, and a case was filed by the victim's mother last night (16 March).
Police arrested the five accused after conducting drives throughout the night.
