HC rules on bail of 2 brothers in Faridpur

The High Court has issued a rule asking why the two brothers – Sajjad Hossain alias Barkat, the expelled general secretary of Faridpur city Awami League and Imtiaz Hasan Rubel, the expelled president of Faridpur Press Club – should not be granted bail in the Tk2,000 crore money laundering case.

Relevant parties have been asked to respond to the rule within the next two weeks.

The HC virtual bench comprising of Justices Mohammad Nazrul Islam Talukder and Ahmed Sohail passed the rule on Monday after hearing the bail pleas of the accused.

Lawyer Mohammad Khurshid Alam Khan appeared for the ACC in court, while Kamrul Alam Kamal represented the accused. Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state.

On 26 June 2020, Crime Investigation Department (CID) inspector SM Miraj Al Mahmud filed a money laundering case against the two brothers at Kafrul Police Station in the capital, accusing them of illegally acquiring and smuggling assets worth around Tk2,000 crore.

On 7 June, police arrested nine people, including Sajjad and Rubel, from different parts of the city on charges of involvement in the attack on the residence of district Awami League President Subal Chandra Saha in Golchamat area of ​​Faridpur city. 

Cases were later filed against them under several laws, including the Arms Act. The two brothers are followers of Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, a member of parliament and former minister.

On the morning of 19 July, the CID took both brothers into their custody from Faridpur Jail and were then taken to the CID office in Dhaka. On 21 July, at the end of a two-day remand, the court granted an additional remand of three days in respond to CID's request for ten days.

On 24 July, following a 5-day remand, Rubel and Barkat provided a confessional statement in the Metropolitan Magistrate's Court under Section 164.

CID Assistant Superintendent of Police Uttam Kumar Biswas, who is investigating the case, said, "The two brothers have mentioned the names of everyone who has patronised them in earning thousands of takas."

On the night of 16 May, two attacks took place at the house of Faridpur district Awami League president Subal Chandra Saha. 

Subal Saha filed a case with Faridpur's Kotwali Police Station on 18 May, accusing unknown individuals.
