Gono Bishwabidyalay students arrested for drugging, gang-raping classmate and extorting money
The complaint states that the accused threatened to circulate the recordings on social media and even to throw acid if the victim spoke out or took legal action
Police have arrested four students of Gono Bishwabidyalay in Ashulia for allegedly drugging a fellow student under the pretext of a picnic, gang-raping her, recording the assault on video, and later blackmailing her for money.
The accused — Delwar Bhuiya (26), Tajul Islam Taj (23), Shraban Saha (23), and Antu Dewan (28) — are all students of the university's law department. They were apprehended today afternoon during a raid at a mess adjacent to the campus.
According to the FIR, on the morning of 7 April, around 11am, Delwar, Tajul Islam, and Shraban lured the victim to the Fulertik area in Ashulia under the guise of a picnic. On the way, they allegedly drugged her drink, rendering her unconscious. When she regained consciousness around 5pm, she found herself in a hostel room and realised she had been sexually assaulted, with the perpetrators having recorded images and videos of the crime on their phones.
The complaint states that the accused threatened to circulate the recordings on social media and even to throw acid if the victim spoke out or took legal action. Using these threats, they allegedly extorted a total of Tk96,000 from her over time.
Further allegations include a 4 November incident in which the perpetrators coerced the victim into sexual activity by threatening to release the videos. On 6 November, while the victim was on her way to the university, the accused allegedly blocked her path and forced her to engage with Antu Dewan.
When she refused, she was physically assaulted and given a narcotic drink. She managed to escape to the campus but collapsed and was admitted to a hospital, eventually being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital due to worsening condition.
The FIR also alleges that on 26 November, the victim encountered the accused in her department's classroom. They reportedly locked the door and pressured her to withdraw her complaint, threatening legal repercussions and other harm.
Rafiqul Alam, chair of Gono Bishwabidyalay's Proctorial Body, confirmed that the victim's family had submitted a written complaint naming Delwar. During questioning, Delwar denied the allegations. As the student continued attending classes, no further action was taken by the authority.
Ashulia police station OC Md Abdul Hannan said the case was filed Tuesday night, and the four accused were arrested today afternoon during a hostel raid.
