A 56-year-old man was handed over to the police after being beaten by locals for allegedly attempting to rape a schoolgirl in Lalmonirhat sadar yesterday.

The suspect, Meher Ali, is from Gokunda village in the upazila, reports UNB, quoting sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Nurnabi.

In two other incidents in Chattogram and Jashore, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver was arrested for allegedly raping a female beggar, while another suspect went into hiding.

The accused in the Chattogram incident, Md Abdul Ali, 55, from Bhola, was arrested in the city's Chandgaon area around 2am yesterday. He confessed to committing the crime during primary interrogation, said Chandgaon police station OC Aftab Uddin.

The incident reportedly took place on 11 March, said the OC.

In Jashore, a 28-year-old man has been accused of attempting to rape a 10-year-old girl in Chougachha upazila.

The incident reportedly took place around 11:30am yesterday. The accused, Md Mithu, has remained absconding since then.

Confirming the matter, Chougachha police station OC Anwar Hossain said the girl's family filed a complaint, and a drive has been launched to detain the accused.
