Four individuals were arrested for allegedly looting cash from a madrasah-cum-orphanage under the Karnaphuli Police Station in Chattogram.

The arrestees have been identified as Bidyut Dev, 35, a resident of the Master Para area of Bashkhali; Md Suhail Anwar, a serving security personnel; Md Shafiqul Islam, 48, a resident of Pekua in Cox's Bazar; and Suman Kanti Dey, 40, a resident of Bhujpur in Chattogram, said Karnaphuli Police.

Of them, Shafiqul falsely claimed to be a retired army major, Jahir Hosen, officer-in-charge of Karnaphuli Police Station told The Business Standard.

He said Shafiqul, the arrested security personnel, has been handed over to the authorities concerned.

The arrestees, along with five others, allegedly entered the Altafia Yashinia Al Ejaz International Madrasa and Orphanage in the Khwajanagar area, posing as joint force detectives on Thursday night and looted cash from there, said the police official.

"The group entered the establishment at around 8:30pm on the pretence of conducting a search and looted a total of 3,00,000 dirhams and 6,000 rials and Tk4,98,000 in cash," said OC Jahir.

"When they attempted to flee in a microbus, local residents grew suspicious and managed to apprehend four of the suspects, including the driver of the vehicle. Five others managed to escape," he added.

Later, after being informed of the matter, Karanaphuli Police and army patrol teams arrived at the scene around 10:45pm and took the suspects into custody.

Regarding the huge amount of foreign currency in the madrasah, OC Jahir said the foreign currency was donated by expatriates for the welfare of the madrasah and the orphanage.

Legal action against the arrested individuals is currently underway, and efforts to capture the remaining five suspects are ongoing, he added.
