A Dhaka court has granted a police petition to show former Ekattor TV editor-in-chief and CEO Mozammel Haque Babu as arrested in an extortion case filed at Banani Police Station.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman passed the order today (10 August) following the police application, after which Babu was sent back to prison.
Earlier, the case's investigating officer and Banani police Sub-Inspector Rajiul Amin produced him before the court and sought the order.
According to the case statement, on 17 March 2007, during the military-backed caretaker government, Babu and others visited the Baishakhi TV offices, allegedly demanding Tk10 crore in extortion and pressuring the management to make them shareholders in the channel.
They reportedly obtained signatures on a share application form worth Tk3 lakh and took Tk4.5 lakh in cash from a cupboard.
The case was filed on 11 January this year by Chowdhury Md Humayun Kabir of Baishakhi Media Limited against Babu and two others.
Babu was initially arrested on 16 September last year from the Dhobaura border area in Mymensingh. The following day, he was placed on a seven-day remand in a murder case filed with Ramna Police Station over incidents linked to the July protests.
On 23 September, he was sent to prison, where he remained in custody.
